What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants refer to titanium posts that are surgically placed beneath the gumline, into the upper or lower jawbone. These posts are capable of fusing with bone tissue in order to form a permanent bond that replaces the roots of missing teeth. From there, custom-made restorations can be attached on top; these are natural-looking and enhance a patient’s oral functionality. Better yet, dental implants are strong and durable and will last many years, potentially even a lifetime.
The 4-Step Dental Implant Process

The process of getting implants requires a number of visits over several months, but it can normally be categorized into four key steps:
- Initial Consultation: The process starts with a consultation at our office, where X-rays and impressions (molds) are taken of the jaw and teeth to determine bone, gum tissue, and spacing available for an implant. Keep in mind that patients must have sufficient jawbone density to accommodate implants.
- Dental Implant Surgery: The dental implant surgery is fairly straightforward, and it usually takes 1-2 hours per implant. While the area is numb, the implants will be surgically placed into the bone at precise angles and locations.
- Osseointegration/Abutment: The implants will need several months to heal and fuse with the jawbone before abutments can be attached, which hold the future restoration(s).
- Delivery of Restoration(s): After the healing period, the artificial teeth are securely attached to the implant, providing excellent stability and comfort, and allowing for full oral functionality.
You will receive care instructions when your treatment is completed. Good oral hygiene and eating habits, alongside regular dental visits, will aid in the life of your new implant.
Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants don’t just fill the gaps in your smile; they also offer several life-changing benefits that other tooth replacement solutions can’t match. This includes:
- Dental implants have the potential to last for several decades or even a lifetime with optimal care.
- They don’t require any specialized cleaning materials or methods, unlike traditional options such as dentures.
- No matter the extent of your tooth loss, dental implants can help; they can replace one, two, or all of your missing teeth.
- Dental implants can prevent the bone loss that occurs following tooth loss since they stimulate the jawbone in the same way that your natural tooth roots do.
